Rock climbing and performance coaching

To climbers the world over  the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is home to  4,500 of the best sea cliff climbs in the UK. Alun and Trevor know the cliffs intimately and  run a variety of high quality rock climbing courses. The main areas for climbers are the limestone cliffs of south Pembrokeshire, particularly around Lydstep, Penally, Stackpole and the Castlemartin MOD ranges. In the north of the county there is also some fantastic climbing around St Davids and the coastline to the north east.

So why is this area so special for climbers? Firstly there is miles of steep, solid limestone with spectacular features, big holds and the potential to do some seriously wild climbing above clean blue seas all within a short walk of the car. Secondly, the weather (believe it or not) is actually pretty good here compared to many parts of the UK. It can often be climbed in a T-shirt at St. Govan’s Head in February while other areas of the UK is covered in wet or snow.Thirdly, the stunning wildlife; birds, seals, porpoise and more that are often seen while belaying half way up the cliff.

You are not born a good climber - the genetic advantages and disadvantages dictate your physical attributes but they can be improved or repressed by your upbringing and nurturing. None of us know what our potential is until we try to reach it. The next time you envy a talented climber do not blame your genetics or lack of fitness. Strength and stamina undoubtedly become more important as you climb harder routes, but the best way to become a better climber is to develop better movement first. Learning good movement at the start of your climbing career is vital because bad movement patterns, once ingrained, are more difficult to overcome.

First aid is life saving when administered during the first hour and your rescue skills may help prevent an epic turning into a disaster. The cliff environment is always changing, so following ABC like a fire drill, will not always work. You will learn the tools used in rescues and how to use them effectively to solve any problem you may encounter.

Leading is a physical and mental game of chess as you work your way to the top of the pitch, protecting yourself by clipping bolts or placing protection, and belayed by a partner at the bottom. Learning to lead is an exhilarating yet daunting experience but there are a number of things that you can do to make it less harrowing. The course is particularly useful for climbers making the transition from indoor walls to the outdoors.
